In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in the use psychedelics. The “Psychedelic Renaissance” is driven by growing evidence that substances such as MDMA, psilocybin (the active ingredient in “magic mushrooms”), LSD, and ketamine can be powerful catalysts for healing, especially when combined with psychotherapy. Clinical trials are beginning to show that psychedelic-assisted therapy can treat conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety and addiction. Potential benefits may extend beyond clinical indications, as research on microdosing indicates that these compounds can enhance focus, creativity and personal growth.
For the time being, due to the legal status of most psychedelics, access to these new treatments is currently limited to clinical trials, some religious organizations such as Santo Daime, and the Special Access Program for Canadians. Nonetheless, the promising research results and growing media attention around them has led to increased interest and intentional therapeutic use of psychedelics by the general public. However, psychedelic use does comes with some risks and should be approached with caution and care. Unfortunately, many people are left to their own devices to procure and consume psychedelics in the underground, without adequate information, preparation and integration. While most therapists (myself included) don’t condone illegal activity, we have an obligation to educate and support individuals who are seeking out these experiences. This is where Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Integration (PHRI) comes into play.
PHRI is a form coaching for individuals interested in exploring psychedelics outside of clinical and research settings which can help ensure a safe and therapeutic experiences. There are 5 core principles of PHRI:
- Education and Preparation: Knowledge and understanding of psychedelic compounds is essential. PHRI specialists provide evidence-based information about the substances, their effects, potential risks, and best practices. This education empowers individuals to make informed decisions and fosters a sense of responsibility and agency.
- Harm Reduction Strategies: While the use of psychedelics may carry inherent risks, PHRI therapy focuses on minimizing potential harm. Therapists help clients develop harm reduction strategies to enhance safety during the psychedelic experience. This may include discussing proper dosage, safe environments, sitters or guides, and strategies to manage challenging emotions or unexpected situations.
- Integration Support: The psychedelic experience can be profound and transformative, but its impact often extends beyond the immediate journey. Integration involves incorporating insights, emotions, and newfound perspectives from the experience into daily life. PHRI therapy provides a supportive space for individuals to process and integrate their psychedelic experiences, helping them derive long-term benefits and personal growth.
- Emotional and Psychological Support: Psychedelic journeys can evoke a wide range of emotions and may rehash challenging or unresolved psychological material. PHRI therapists are trained to provide emotional and psychological support through challenging experiences, which can contribute to landing peacefully or even transforming the difficulty into more profound insight.
- Trauma-Informed Approach: The PHRI framework recognizes that trauma is often at the root of treatment-resistant symptoms and that psychedelics can provide emotional resources for processing trauma. Trained PHRI therapists are equipped to create a trauma-sensitive container for clients who are ready to explore and process.
Scientific research into the effectiveness of PHRI therapy is still emerging, but early studies and anecdotal evidence show promising results. Preliminary research supports findings suggest that the intentional and supported use of psychedelics, coupled with comprehensive integration, can lead to reduced symptoms of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and increased overall well-being.
